Multicolores
These amazing hooked-rugs are always a customer favorite and many hours have been spent turning through the stack looking for the BEST one! Each piece is a unique work of art designed and created by the women of Guatemala. The founders of Multicolores have expanded the market for artisan goods using the traditional skills and designs of the Maya by creating a new and exciting product utilizing readily available materials – RECYCLED T-SHIRTS! Yes, these rugs are made of upcycled jersey knit fabric from both discarded clothing and offcuts from the garment industry. The women of Multicolores design each piece, collect the textiles and cut it into “yarn,” and then hand hook each piece. (We have several Multicolores rugs in our own home – one in front of the kitchen sink, one in the bathroom, and one in the hall – and we love them! They wear beautifully and hold up well in high traffic areas – they are made of t-shirts afterall!). Multicolores is a Guatemala registered non-profit organization that supports Maya women in their process of self-discovery and artistic development.Their programs are transformative- creating long-term, sustainable impacts that strengthen entire communities. They use art as a tool for exploration and expression, igniting the artists’ many talents and abilities, and empowering them to become powerful agents of change.
Multicolores works with groups of Maya K’iché, Kaqchiquel and Tzutujil women from the Guatemalan highlands. Our artists represent 9 communities from the regions of Sololá, Totonicapán, Quiché, Quetzaltenango and Sacatepéquez.
Together we are a strong support network that encourages well-being and fulfillment among all members. We believe in mutual aid, promote environmental consciousness and thrive on building relationships with diverse local and international communities.
