Carlos Caceres is a self-taught folk artist from Cienfuegos, Cuba, whose vibrant paintings capture the essence of Cuban culture and tradition. His journey as an artist began in childhood, using crayons on poster boards before progressing to oil and acrylic paints. Carlos’s distinctive style, influenced by his personal experiences and consciousness, embodies the naive art tradition prevalent in his community.
In his artwork, Carlos depicts scenes from everyday life in the Cuban countryside, often featuring motifs from religion, particularly the Santeria faith. Women adorned with Orishas, the saints of Santeria, are a recurring theme, reflecting the deep cultural and spiritual significance of the religion in Cuban society. Carlos’s paintings portray a rich tapestry of customs, from tile floors to stained glass windows, offering a glimpse into the soul of his community.
Carlos’s artistic process is as unique as his style. He begins by sketching his ideas with graphite pencils on canvas before applying acrylic paint using homemade applicators crafted from repurposed toothpaste tubes. This innovative approach not only reflects his resourcefulness but also adds a personal touch to his creations.
Despite facing challenges like the scarcity of materials in Cuba, Carlos’s dedication to his craft remains unwavering. Through his art, Carlos not only preserves Cuban heritage but also fosters community pride and recognition, proving that the power of creativity transcends borders and challenges.
Steven and Colvin have been admirers of Carlos’ work for many years and after receiving one of his paintings as a wedding gift they became active collectors. During the pandemic, they wanted to support artisans who were struggling as their markets disappeared. They bought 15 paintings from Carlos hoping they would be able to sell them when the store in Seal Beach reopened. And sell they did! We continue to get new works and each piece is an original, so be sure to check back often for new pieces!
